About Our Properties
We just love being by the water, and whichever of our two houses you choose, you are literally just moments from the sea or the river Dart. Both are light-filled, spacious and have been sympathetically renovated to provide you with the “feel” and modernity of a boutique hotel whilst at the same time allowing you the freedom of being totally independent. Self-catering has, at last, come-of-age and no longer means putting up with swirly-patterned sticky carpets, broken mis-matched crockery and floral duvets. Instead, both houses are furnished to a very high standard and includes large flat-screen T.V,s, Wi-Fi, music systems, fully fitted modern kitchens, luxurious bed linen and towels and stunning bathrooms. A wood fired hot tub in Cliff House, another plus an outdoors kitchen and bar in Speedwell House. Every little details has been thought of to ensure that you experience the most perfect holiday that you will want to repeat….Cliff House by the sea one year, Speedwell House on the river Dart the next….
Cliff House is simply unique – an historic, detached house, it occupies an outstanding cliff top position offering privacy and seclusion. Set on an elevated, rocky promontory above the small village of Torcross, the stunning views from nearly all the rooms are un-interrupted and spell-binding; from the Mew Stone and the mouth of the Dart Estuary, sweeping around Start Bay and including Slapton Sands and Ley to Start Point Lighthouse and over the beautiful South Hams countryside. From local croissants and coffee at breakfast to the very last glass of Sharpham’s wine before bed you will find it hard to tear yourself away from an ever-changing vista of boats, sunrises, sunsets, seagulls and stars – all accompanied by the soporific breaking of the waves directly below.
Cliff House is also one of the oldest houses in Torcross, brimming with extensive period features and character, including stone walls, flagstone floors, original timber beams, doors and fireplaces. Recently totally renovated, doors from virtually all the rooms lead out to the secluded terraces or balconies that make the most of the wonderful views and track the sun all day long. A wood fired hot tub sits on an elevated terrace with wide-ranging views over Torcross and Start Bay. Several reception rooms means that everyone has room to relax and five large bedrooms sleep 10 in comfort. Spacious, light-filled and very welcoming, Cliff House really is a must for those looking for something special by the coast. And as we are very dog friendly there is no problem about bringing your furry pets with you. Finally, plenty of onsite parking means a stress-free holiday. Read more…
Speedwell House is a wonderful 3 storey Edwardian family home which has just been lovingly renovated whilst still retaining many of its period features including wooden floors, woodburners, high ceilings and an aga. It offers one of the finest views in Dartmouth, with a 200 degree vista over the river Dart from Castle to College, with nearly every room taking full advantage of the view. Watch the yachts, fishing boats, ferries, cruise liners come and go as you sip an ice-cold G&T on the spacious deck or from one of the tiered garden terraces. The generous ground floor living/dining/kitchen areas have been opened up to make the most of easy flow living with easy access out into the newly built music room extension and out onto the extensive deck, for perfect entertaining with friends and family. Upstairs, over two further floors, there are 4 blissed-out, stylish bedrooms, sleeping 8, and plenty of sparkling bathrooms.
The deck and new music room extension open out into the garden which surrounds the house, with lawn to the front and a tiered back garden rising up through apple and pear trees into the woods at the back.
Your very own outdoor kitchen sits on the middle tier terrace and includes both a Weber and Komado Jo ceramic Egg bbq. Just bring the makings for your favourite outdoor feast and cocktails and you’re all set for the perfect week. On a higher terrace is our wood fired hottub , outdoor shower and lounging area. Dont forget that we are very dog friendly so your pampered pooches can also share in your holiday. Parking is directly outside the house in our own carport and we can accommodate 2 or 3 cars.
Holidays In Devon
Holidays in Devon have always had a nostalgic rosy glow about them, and Torcross is no exception. It is an unspoilt coastal village located in a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty and enjoys glorious views of Start Bay which extends from the Mew Stone around the glorious 3 mile sweep of Slapton Sands and culminates in the craggy cliffs at Start Point Lighthouse. The village lies between the beach on one side and the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley on the other and is a great location for bird watchers, walkers, sailors and beach lovers alike. Small as it is, Torcross offers all the facilities you need for an enjoyable self-catering holiday with a celebrated pub and restaurant, cafes, post office/village store and nearby farmshop. Cliff House is a mere 5 minutes walk away from the centre of the village [this is downhill– its more like 10 minutes going back!] and as we offer several dedicated car parking spaces you won’t need to take the car.
Situated at the mouth of the river Dart, and opposite the picturesque village of Kingwear, you’ll find the historical town of Dartmouth. With its enchanting streets and scenic riverside location, it offers an abundance of quirky shops, boutiques, art galleries, pubs and excellent places to eat. Overlooking one of the finest deep water ports in the UK, it attracts sailing vessels from all over the globe and the annual Royal Regatta is well-known, along with several other year-round events. Lying within the South Hams it is surrounded by stunning countryside and close to some of the best beaches in the area. Speedwell house is a 10 minute walk into the centre of Dartmouth so close enough to leave the car, but just outside the hustle and bustle so that you can always return to your calm and serene haven. 2020 see the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower [ and the Speedwell at least started...] sailing to the New World and Dartmouth will see many commemorative events.
As holiday accommodation in Devon, both Cliff House and Speedwell House are ideally situated for exploring all of the best local attractions including Dittisham, Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Bigbury, Dartmoor, the coastal path and many local beaches including the award-winning Blackpool Sands.
Have a look at our “Out & About” section for extensive details on where to go, what to eat, what to do etc over a wide area of Devon. From walking to kayaking, from pubs to fine dining, from farmers markets to pick-your-own, from beaches to spas, from crabbing to golf, from sailing to ferries, we hope to give you so much to do that one week won’t be enough!
We also feel that a holiday just wouldn’t be the same without bringing your dogs , so both of our properties are dog friendly, and you will find dog bowls, balls, spare leads and other doggie stuff in both of our homes.
Read more about each of our houses to give you a more detailed inventory and information– hopefully, the only things you’ll have to bring are your clothes, some food and drink and an appetite for enjoying yourselves… oh, and a sense of humour/patience for driving around the Devon lanes. Welcome to a modern self-catering holiday in Devon – and welcome to our homes at the coast,
Warmest regards, Tracy, David, Beth and Cassie Rist.
